Used by more hospitals than all other general simulation packages combined, MedModel is a powerful windows-based simulation tool for visualizing, analyzing, and optimizing the performance of health care systems of all types and sizes.  It is a predictive analytic tool designed specifically for the healthcare industry to evaluate, plan, and design/redesign the processes, procedures and policies of hospitals, clinics and labs.   In the hands of a trained and experienced analyst, MedModel models can be used to identify inefficiencies in an existing process and test a variety of scenarios. The animation and graphic output results show the behavior of your system under any set of circumstances.  This technology provides the perfect combination of ease-of-use and complete flexibility and power for modeling nearly any situation, and its realistic animation capabilities make simulation come to life.

MedModel provides engineers and managers the opportunity to test new ideas for system design or improvement before committing the time and resources necessary to build or alter the actual system. MedModel focuses on issues such as resource utilization, system capacity, and capability. By modeling the important elements of a health care system, the model builder can experiment with different operating strategies and designs to achieve the best results.

 Typical applications of MedModel include:

  • Department specific productivity improvement
  • Facilities design (labs, clinics, radiology, ER's, OR's, etc.)
  • Planning for future changes
  • Staff planning
  • Analyzing patient capacity
  • Equipment planning and logistical analysis
  • Evaluate the impact of HIPAA, JCAHO and other changes
  • Emergency preparedness
  • Bed capacity management
  • Health care policy formulation
  • Managed care analysis

MedModel Customers

MedModel-based Solutions are successfully used by some of the world's leading healthcare organizations including:

Carilion Health System, Dana Farber Harvard Cancer Center, St. Louis VAMC,  American Red Cross, Baylor Health System, Deaconess – Evansville, HCA, Intermountain Health Care, The Mayo Clinic, MD Anderson, Miami Valley Hospital and many more.

Make Better Decisions Faster

With MedModel’s convenient modeling constructs and graphical user interface, model building is quick and easy. The model builder defines how each particular system operates, typically through patient movement, flow, and care plan logic. During simulation, an animated representation of the system appears on the screen. After the simulation, performance measures such as resource utilization, productivity and inventory levels are tabulated and may be easily graphed for analysis in the Output Viewer 3DR.

MedModel serves the dual purpose of being a turn-key Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) software product that allows users to begin building models immediately, as well as being a Software Developers Kit (SDK) which empowers sophisticated users the ability to connect with other software and data systems via internal import and export controls as well as through COM technology using external applications.

As a high end discrete event simulation tool, complex programming logic can be defined directly in the MedModel. AutoCad drawings can be imported in order to allow the creation of a model from existing floor plans; complete customization of the graphics library is fully supported. MedModel simulation models can easily import Excel data files and automatically export model statistics out to Excel files.  In a similar manner, MedModel can read data directly from databases using queries or stored procedures.

Custom user interfaces (or “front ends”) can also be created by the advanced user utilizing MedModel’s COM (component object model) technology. This COM technology allows the user to use any ActiveX-enabled language (e.g. Microsoft Visual Basic, VBA, or Visual C++) to:

  • Build customized user interfaces for MedModel.
  • Add, Change or Delete model data from external data sources, such as spreadsheets, databases or text files
  • Control MedModel from another application
  • Extract output data and place it in a spreadsheet or database.

MedModel is compatible with Process Simulator, ProModel’s Plug-In for Microsoft Visio.  A simulation model that is built in Process Simulator can be opened up directly in MedModel and then enhanced when more complex modeling and analysis is needed.

System optimization studies can be performed in MedModel via SimRunner. These optimization tools take your existing MedModel simulation models and perform experiments using your model to find better ways to achieve the results you desire. Through testing various “what-if” scenarios, optimization can help you determine the most ideal way to conduct operations.

Stat::Fit is a statistical analysis tool that fits analytical distributions to user data. Learn more about Stat::Fit.

3D Animator is a post-simulation add-in for MedModel. Using a 3D animation script generated by MedModel, you can create a fully-configurable, 3-Dimensional layout. All objects are rendered three dimensionally, allowing the animation to closely reflect the reality that the model is simulating. You can view this 3D animation from any angle, and choreograph the presentation to automatically pan, zoom, change speed, and track objects as they move during animation. 3D Animator also includes the ability to embed video clips into the presentation to further illustrate your system’s behavior.
